How to download & unzip/extract fonts using the
built-in Extractor in Windows XP

For this tutorial you will need:
WindowsXP

Create a Folder
The 1st thing you need to do is create a folder on your desktop to download fonts into...to do this, right click on an empty area of your desktop...
(the desktop is the 1st screen with icons after you sign onto your computer)...

And this box will pop up...click on New...

Then another box will expand out from the 1st box...click on Folder

A New Folder will appear on your desktop,

Name the folder My Fonts, by typing it in the small box below the folder, the box should already be highlighted(grey), so you don't need to click in the box, just start typing, and it will erase the current text...
You have just created a new folder to download fonts into

Downloading a Font
Now lets download a font to add to your new folder...
Go Here and find Platthand Demo, (since you'll be needing it later
if you're doing Robbie's lessons
) Click on the sample of the font

This box will open... click on Save

Now you need to direct the download to your new folder...click on the arrow for the dropdown box, and browse till you find Desktop, click on it to open it, then locate and click on My Fonts folder, click Open

Now that you've located and opened your My Fonts folder, click Save

Click on Close...or you can put a check in the box next to Close this dialog box when download completes, and it will automatically close when finished downloading, and will save you some time
Your new font is now in your new Font folder

Unzip/Extract
Usually when you download a font, it is zipped/compressed, and you need to unzip/extract it...To do this, locate the My Fonts folder on your desktop, double click to open it, locate the new font, Phatthand Demo, and double click on it..(you can recognize fonts by the TTF extention)

This box will open, click on Extract all files

This box will open, click Next

This box will open...
if you want to put the file in another location, click on Browse to locate another folder, otherwise, you don't need to click on Browse, it will automatically download the file into the folder you are currently in, which is where you want to put this font, so just click Next

This box will open...you want to remove the check if there is one in the box, or your files will open up in another window...click Finish

Now when you open your My Fonts folder, you will see your new font, ready to use...if you want to use the fonts that are located in this folder, open the My Fonts folder, locate the font you want to use, double click on it to open it, then minimize it to the taskbar (click on the dash - in the top right hand corner to minimize it), and as long as it remains open, it will appear in the text dropdown boxes of your Programs

Installing Fonts In The Windows Font Folder
It's not wise to install too many fonts in your system fonts folder, as it can bog down your computer...thats why most PSP'ers create a folder to store their less used fonts in...

To make it easier to browse through your font collection, you can use a Font Manager, there is a list of several Font Managers Here ...
AMP Font Viewer is a good one, and its free...

There will be some fonts that you will use often, so you'll want to add them to your system font folder...to do this, go to My Fonts folder on your desktop, and double click on it to open it...

after you open your folder it will look like this...

Now click on Start

This box will pop open, scroll up to Control Panel and click on it

Look for the Font folder, and double click on it to open it

If your Control panel doesn't look like the one above, but looks like this one, then click where the hand is pointing, to change it to Classic View

You should now have two windows open, one for the Fonts folder, and one for the My Fonts folder

Now you can click and hold on the Platthand Demo font in My Fonts folder, and drag it over to the Fonts folder and drop it in there by releasing the click you were holding(you can see the trail as it moves across)

A small box will pop up to show the install progress, and poof it's gone when finished installing (too quick for me to get a screenshot)

That's it..your font is now installed, and ready to use

I should warn you now...Collecting fonts is Very addictive
