Basic Layers

For this tutorial you will need:
PSP 7

Page 2

Now keep adding layers and flowers until all the canvas is covered. Don't forget to change the scale down by 20 each time and add a drop shadow on each layer

OK now we have all the canvas covered we are going to bring the Flower 1 layer up to the top because all those smaller flowers have totally covered the large flowers

We can do this 2 ways...

Click on the layer you want to move so it is highlight it and make it the active layer

Layers > Arrange > Bring To Top

OR

Click on the layer you want to move, keep the mouse button held and drag the layer to the top

This how your layer palette will look

(The amount of layers depends on how many you have used)

and this is how your canvas will look

Ok now we want to add some pictures and text to our canvas but the background is too busy so we're going to use put Layer 1 to use! This is the first layer that we didn't put any flowers on so it is still blank.

Click on Layer 1 and drag it up so it is at the top of the layers

In your Styles Foreground box choose Solid Colour, click in the centre and choose White when the colour options window opens

Flood fill tool and flood fill Layer 1

Now we can't see our flowers at all so we're going to go to the layer palette and reduce the Opacity of Layer 1 by moving the slider for the Layer Opacity from 100 to about 70

You can see on the screenshot how moving the opacity has allowed the flowers to be seen but they're not as strong as before

OK we now want to Merge these layers

Go to Layers > Merge > Merge All (Flatten)

(By Merging All (Flatten), any gaps that we might have missed on the flower layers will be filled in with white. If you're working on a project where you want a transparent background always Merge Visible as this keeps the background transparency)

This layer will now be named Merged

Time now to add some tubes and some text!

Go to Layers > New Raster Layer

I chose to use butterflies

I named my layer Butterfly 1

Click on the tube tool and choose the tube you want to use. Set the scale so the tube will fit comfortably on the canvas

Add the tube

Because the tube is on it's own layer you can use the mover tool  to position the tube where you would like it

If you want to add more tubes add a new layer for each tube so it can be easily repositioned if needed

I added 3 more butterfly's and changed the scale each time to make them smaller and i also added a ladybird

I added some very small butterflies but when I'd applied them to the layer I found I didn't like the affect. The great thing about layers is, if you make a mistake it can easily be undone by deleting the layer

(Last page, I promise LOL)
