Understanding Text

For this tutorial you will need:
PSP 9 or X (10)

Animation Shop

If you are a new PSP user and you only have PSP X without Animation Shop, you
can download AS for free at Jasc:
http://FTP.jasc.Com/pub/en/ani311en.exe .

The first text you will be doing is Solid colour Stroke, (outline) with a Solid colour Fill.

First you need to open a new image. (You will see tutorials referring to a new image or a new canvas, they both mean the same thing)

The following box will open.

You have various choices on this box. For this tutorial we're going to use our own image dimensions.

I've used 300 width and 300 height. You may need to make your canvas bigger depending on the size of the text you are going to be using.

We're making it a Raster Background.

Click OK when you've done the settings as above and your new canvas will open on the workspace.

Now let's set the colours in the materials palette.

When you first open PSP, the materials palette will look like this.

The stroke and fill boxes are both set on solid colour.

To change the solid colour, click inside the top colour box on the materials palette. A materials properties box will open.

You can choose a colour from the boxes

or from the colour wheel

To use the colour wheel, click on the little circle on the outer wheel. Keep the mouse button pressed and move the circle round the wheel. As you move it round, colour in the Current window will change.

Moving the small circle round the colour square in the middle will give you different shades.

When you've got the colour you want, click OK.

Repeat for the bottom colour box.

Your materials palette will now look like this.

Now click on the text tool

The tool palette for the text tool will open.

Use the following settings.

Now click on your new canvas and the text entry box will open.

Type in your text then click Apply.

The text will appear on the new canvas. It will have moving lines around it. These are known as marching ants. Marching Ants show you that the text is selected. While it's selected, you can add other effects to the text (You'll be learning about different effects later in the course)

When something has marching ants around it, any effects you apply will only be done to the selected area.

As we're not going to be adding any effects at this time, we can get rid of the marching ants.

Go to Selections > Select None

OK, that's our first text done. We now need to save it.

To keep the background transparent, we'll save it in Animation Shop.

PSP X users can download a trial or full version HERE

Go to File > Save

When the save box opens, click on the options button

A new box will open. Click on the drop down arrow.

Choose

Click ok.

Name your file and choose a folder to save it too. I made a folder in My Pictures to keep all my results together.

Open Animation Shop. Go to File -Browse and browse to the folder where you saved your text.

Double click on it to open it.

The excess canvas will need cropping away. Click on the Crop icon.  When the 3 buttons appear, click on the options button.

When the box opens, click on Surround Opaque Area then click ok.

Now click on the crop button.

Now click on the save icon or go to File > Save As

Name your file, choose your folder and click save.

Alternatively, instead of saving it as a PSP file, you can click on the copy icon then open Animation Shop and click on the Paste As New Animation icon.

When it opens in Animation Shop, all the excess canvas will be cropped away.

You can now save.

This is what you should have.

OK, we're now going to do more text but this time, we'll be doing a solid stroke and gradient fill.

We'll use the same canvas we just used.

To get rid of the text you just did, select Edit - Undo until the canvas is blank again.

Alternatively, you can use the history palette to select which action you want to do undo.

Click on the action you want to undo then click the undo icon.

When you've removed all the actions and your canvas is blank again, click on the little arrows to the left then click on Empty Command History

Now you need to change the fill colour in the materials palette.

Click in the Fill box to get the material properties to open.

Click on the Gradient tab then click on the little arrow to make the gradients open.

Choose a gradient and click OK

Follow the above steps to make your text.

Save it and this is what you should have

Repeat all of the above but this time, choose a pattern for the fill.

This is what you will have

For the Beginners Basics, you need to submit all 3 texts.
